Learn More About District 58's New Middle School Model (Grades 6-8)

District 58 has been carefully preparing for the transition of current fifth and sixth grade students to Herrick and O’Neill Middle Schools under our new 6–8 model, starting in the 2026-27 school year. Our buildings have undergone significant referendum construction and facility upgrades, and staffing is being realigned to best support students in this new structure. This is an exciting milestone, and we hope your family is looking forward to this next step.

Supporting Students and Families

We understand that transitions can bring questions and, at times, uncertainty. Supporting students and families through this change is a top priority. Our administrators and staff are working closely to ensure students feel welcomed, supported, and confident as they enter middle school. Through strong academics, social-emotional supports, and opportunities to get involved, we are creating an experience designed to help every child grow, connect, and thrive.

We encourage families to stay engaged, ask questions, and partner with us throughout this process. Working together, we can make this transition a positive and successful experience for every student.

This Middle School Transition webpage is designed to provide families with easy access to important information and resources about the move to our new 6–8 middle school model.

At the January 12, 2026 Board Meeting, administrators shared a presentation outlining the model and what it means for students. We encourage you to take a few moments to review it.

We have also developed a FAQ section to address common questions and concerns. As additional information becomes available, we will share a link for families to submit questions about the transition.
