New Families
District 58 welcomes all new families to our community! To help with this important transition, we have developed a consistent new family welcoming process across all of our District 58 schools. Whether you’re registering at the start of the school year or mid-year, we want your child’s entrance into District 58 to be successful! Here is an overview of our new student induction process, along with helpful information and resource links.
The District 58 New Student Induction Process
When a new family enrolls their student(s) in District 58, they can expect the following:
- Welcome Folder/Packet: Every school will provide either a digital and/or paper copy of their welcome packet. The welcome packet will include school information, including:
- Important dates/calendar
- School handbook (if applicable)
- PTA information
- School sports/club information
- Transportation information
- Lunch details
- Before- and after-school child care programming
- A copy of the school’s opening newsletter
- A copy of the school’s most recent newsletter (for mid-year transfers)
- New Student Orientation
- When a new student enrolls at District 58, they will:
- be offered a building tour, either before they start school or on their first day
- be assigned a student ambassador or peer buddy -- this student will help welcome them to the school and serve as a first friend
- meet with school administrators and office staff
- Receive help navigating lunch, as well as their locker and schedule (for middle school)
- English learners and newcomers - if a student is an English learner and/or a newcomer to the United States, the schools will provide additional supports, including interpreters and handouts in the student’s native language.
As part of its Strategic Plan, Goal 2: Connecting the Community, District 58 is actively enhancing its new student induction process, and we hope to enhance this page as our work continues.
