Fairmount’s OSOB Penny Challenge benefits Make-a-Wish

Not only are Fairmount students enjoying reading The BFG as part of the school’s One School One Book program this year, they’re also making a difference in the broader community.

That’s because the Fairmount Student Council decided to add a charity component to One School One Book. Student Council wanted to find a charity that connected with the theme of “dreams,” which occurs throughout The BFG. They decided to raise money for the Make-A-Wish foundation by hosting a Penny Challenge. Each Student Council room rep created a “dream-jar” for students to submit their donations. Every penny added points, while nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars subtracted points.

The Penny Challenge lasted two weeks and many students participated! Every day, Fairmount would announce the challenge’s status and the current top three classrooms.

Mrs. Main’s kindergarten class came out on top and won the challenge. As a school, Fairmount collected over $1,250.00 ($1,050 of that total were coin donations).

During the Penny Challenge, special guest readers visited Fairmount at lunchtime to read a chapter of The BFG. Guests included Mayor Martin Tully, Superintendent Dr. Kari Cremascoli and even Tony the Tiger! Photo highlights are above.

This week, Fairmount will have a very special One School One Book guest reader: a recipient of the Make-A-Wish foundation. She will share her story and thank students for the generosity.

Thank you, Fairmount!
