It takes a community: District 58 needs 150 lunchroom supervisors to extend the school day

Dear District 58 Families,

As you are aware, District 58 plans to increase the school day for all students in grades 1-8 beginning Wednesday, April 7. The current plan calls for onsite middle school students to eat lunch at school starting April 7. In addition, onsite elementary (grade 1-6) students will begin eating lunch at school starting on Monday, May 3 or sooner, if logistics can be coordinated more quickly.

In order to increase the school day and offer students a lunch break, District 58 will need to hire approximately 150 lunch supervisors. If you are interested in serving as a lunchroom supervisor, please read the below information carefully and submit an interest form by Friday, March 12. The interest form is linked near the end of this message.

The lunchroom supervisor job is a paid or volunteer position. Applicants will be asked whether they would like to be paid or if they are willing to serve as a volunteer. All hired lunchroom supervisors (both paid and volunteer) will participate in an orientation training and complete fingerprinting and a background check prior to starting work. All lunchroom supervisors will be required to follow and enforce all District 58 safety protocols. Supervisors will monitor classrooms during lunchtime and will be trained on any food allergies that may exist in their assigned classroom.

We prefer candidates who can work five days a week, but are willing to consider part-time applicants as well.

Middle school lunch supervisors will supervise students during a 35-minute lunch period in a designated classroom. Work hours are approximately 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and paid supervisors would receive $15 per day. (Times are subject to change, but will remain approximately one hour.)

Elementary lunch supervisors will supervise students in designated classrooms during two 30-minute lunch periods. Times are still being finalized; however, a supervisor would need to have the availability to work between 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Paid supervisors would receive between $15 and $20 per day, depending on the actual length of time they are needed for the position (between 1-1.5 hours per day).

District 58 continues to prioritize increasing the school day in a safe manner. We cannot increase the instructional school day without lunchroom supervision. This is truly a community effort; if you are able to support District 58 as a lunchroom supervisor, it will have a direct impact on our ability to increase the school day! Thank you for your consideration and continued partnership.

Sincerely,

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 Administrative Team
