Board of Education: July 30 meeting preview

Downers Grove SD58 News

The District 58 Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Thursday, July 30 at 5:00 p.m. at the Downers Grove Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave. Under Governor Pritzker’s guidelines for Phase 4, a limited number of seats will be available for the public to attend the meeting in person. The public is strongly encouraged to participate in the meeting remotely.

The purpose of this meeting is to approve the Fall 2020 Reopening Plan, as well as a temporary rule regarding face coverings in schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Board will review detailed plans for all three return-to-school scenarios (in-person, blended, and remote). At its meeting on July 13, the Board voted to pursue the feasibility of modified on-site learning as well as review options for blended and remote learning. Detailed plans for all three scenarios are being developed by the administration with the input and feedback of staff working groups, state guidance and survey responses from parents and staff. The Board will ultimately select a plan it feels prioritizes the safety of students and staff, enhances instruction, and is the most feasible.

Families will receive notification of the Board’s final decision on Friday, July 31. The detailed plan will be sent to all families on Monday, Aug. 3. Families will not be asked to make a final commitment on the learning option for their child(ren) until Monday, Aug. 10 at 12:00 p.m.

How to view the meeting:

The State recently enacted legislation that amended provisions to the Open Meetings Act. Public Act 101-640 allows school boards to hold meetings virtually during a disaster proclamation such as that due to COVID-19.

The public may view the meeting via a live stream on the Village of Downers Grove’s YouTube page at www.youtube.com/VillageDownersGrove. After the meeting has concluded, this live stream will be saved on District 58’s YouTube channel and posted to the District 58 website.

For those who choose to attend the meeting in person, seating for visitors will be limited to 25 on a first come, first served basis. Social distancing must be adhered to and all visitors must wear a mask. The doors will open at 4:45 p.m.

How to make a public comment during the meeting if you do not attend in person:

The Board encourages public comment from the community. District 58 created a Google Form, which is linked in the “Public Comment” section of the meeting agenda. This form will be open on Thursday, July 30 from 4 p.m. through the end of the public comment portion of the meeting. The School Board will read public comments aloud during the meeting. All public comments submitted will be posted publicly in the meeting minutes, along with the commenter’s name and school attendance area. Members of the public may communicate with the Board at any time by emailing boe@dg58.org.
