Board of Education: July 13 meeting preview

Downers Grove SD58 News

The District 58 Board of Education will hold a Regular Board Meeting on Monday, July 13 at 7 p.m. at Downers Grove Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave. Some Board members may participate remotely, as the Board President finds it is not prudent to hold the meeting entirely in person due to the disaster declared by the Governor. Though a limited number of seats will be available for the public to attend the meeting in person, the public is strongly encouraged to participate in the meeting remotely.

The meeting agenda covers many topics, including:

  • A spotlight on the work of the Remote Learning Task Force and guidance for the reopening of schools from the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois Department of Public Health and the DuPage County Health Department
  • A plan for fall learning that will pursue in-person instruction five days per week for all students
  • Other recommendations for action regarding several topics, including: the approval of the newly revised Board Policy Manual; contract renewals for Champions and special education transportation; the purchase of 170 iPads to allow for 1:1 devices for kindergarten students; and the setting of the cost for a reimbursable paid lunch for the 2020-21 school year.

How to view the meeting:

The State recently enacted legislation that amended provisions to the Open Meetings Act. Public Act 101-640 allows school boards to hold meetings virtually during a disaster proclamation such as that due to COVID-19.

The public may view the meeting via a live stream on the Village of Downers Grove’s YouTube page at www.youtube.com/VillageDownersGrove. After the meeting has concluded, this live stream will be saved on District 58’s YouTube channel and posted to the District 58 website.

For those who choose to attend the meeting in person, seating will be limited to 28 on a first come, first served basis. Social distancing must be adhered to and all visitors must wear a mask. The doors will open at 6:45 p.m.

How to make a public comment during the meeting if you do not attend in person:

The Board encourages public comment from the community. District 58 created a Google Form, which is linked in the “Public Comment” section of the meeting agenda. This form will be open on Monday, July 13 from 6 p.m. through the end of the public comment portion of the meeting. The School Board will read public comments aloud during the meeting. All public comments submitted will be posted publicly in the meeting minutes, along with the commenter’s name and attendance area. Members of the public may communicate with the Board at any time by emailing boe@dg58.org.
