(2/8/11) A Note From The Principal...
To The Herrick Family,
It sure is hard to believe that February is already here! Even harder to believe is that the 2011-12 school year is more that half-way completed. I know I am speaking on behalf of the entire Herrick staff when I say these two simple words... “Thank You.” I don’t feel like you as parents hear this enough. I say this because we all appreciate your support and partnership. This has truly been an amazing year so far. Both the 7th and 8th grade classes have demonstrated a positive demeanor that makes all of us appreciate that we get to educate the best of the best daily. It has been eye opening to me in my third year as principal of Herrick to see students who participate not only in the classroom (over 375 students on one of the three honor rolls), but also in events at Herrick... not just for themselves, but for their peers. An example would be having students who were not even competing in the Geography Bee Final Round show up to encourage their friends. I cannot remember a time where that happened before. Our crowds for the home athletic events have been larger this year as well. I hope this continues for our girls’ basketball and boys’ volleyball games.
I think it all comes down to making the most out of middle school. If your child has been participating in extra curricular activities, please encourage them to continue, but if your child has not done so, please encourage him/her to give it a try the second half of the year. We have so much to celebrate at Herrick, and it is my hope that the second half of the year gets even better.
The second half of the year is filled with lots of exciting events, but it also can be a difficult time of the year. I say this because there tends to be a low in morale during winter months. We recognize this at Herrick and try to overcome those attitudes by encouraging students to get involved. We will have a pep rally in early March celebrating our students who are involved in Herrick activities, and a group of DGNHS students will be speaking to our students on the importance of leadership. I am looking forward to seeing our students positively taking part in these upcoming activities!
