Young scientists show their chops at 31st annual District 58 science fair

Nearly 600 budding young scientists participated in the 31st annual District 58 Science Fair at O’Neill Middle School Jan. 21.

The hallways and gymnasiums were packed with students eagerly answering questions and discussing their experiments with the judges, which included high school students, parents, staff members, professional scientists and representatives from Downers Grove Friends of the Gifted (FRoG), which co-sponsors the fair. More than 200 volunteer judges assisted with this year’s science fair.

District 58 utilizes variety of notification methods for weather-related school closures

With the onset of the winter weather season, District 58 would like to remind parents and community members about the many ways we provide notification should it become necessary to close school for the safety of our students.

In the event of hazardous weather, the Superintendent of Schools may deem it necessary to close school.

District 58 band and orchestra students preparing for solo performances

Band and orchestra students throughout District 58 have been hard at work since early December preparing for their upcoming solo performances.

District 58’s instrumental music program includes a study and performance unit on the preparation and performance of solo and ensemble literature. Every intermediate through eighth grade student is given a solo to prepare for performance, which they then spend two months preparing.

Professional adjudicators are brought in to listen to each solo and provide constructive feedback.

Preschool registration now open in District 58

Applications for tuition-based enrollment in District 58’s Grove Children’s Preschool program, with its established, research-based educational curriculum, are now available at all District 58 schools and on the District 58 website. Enrollment is open to all District 58 children who will be 3 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2012.

Early applications will be accepted for returning tuition-based students beginning January 17. Applications of siblings of current District 58 students will be accepted beginning January 23. Open enrollment will begin January 30.

District 58 board approves school holiday waiver

Following the required public hearing, the District 58 Board of Education on January 9 voted to approve the use of certain school holidays for purposes other than a holiday. These holidays are: The birthday of Martin Luther King, the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, the birthday of Casimir Pulaski, Columbus Day, and Veteransʼ Day. This allows, but does not require, the District to use one or more of these days for purposes other than a holiday, including student attendance, institute days, parent teacher conferences, or staff development activities.

District 58 Education Foundation gives away nearly $40,000 in grants to schools

The District 58 Education Foundation gave away $40,000 in grants this school year – nearly double the amount it gave away two years ago, and $5,000 over the amount it gave away last year.

“It was truly a pleasure to be able to increase the funding amount this year and see the money put to such good use,” said Education Foundation President Jay Stocki.

Staff were encouraged to apply for grants to enhance curriculum or technology innovations and staff development. The committee received a total of 31 requests.
