Gifted Education Team presents overview, evaluation of program

District 58's Gifted Education team shared an overview of the program, as well as the results of a recent program evaluation and proposed changes, with the Board of Education May 14.

Presenting the information during the meeting were teachers Carrie Daca, Laura Gilmartin and Ginny Lauterbach, along with Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Cathie Pezanoski.

District 58 currently offers gifted education beginning in first grade. Throughout the year:

Indian Trail’s Beth Hatlen named Teacher of the Year

A person of integrity. A teacher who has high expectations for herself, as well as for her students. A colleague whose ideas and insights make her an indispensable team member. A dynamic individual whose passion and love for teaching shines through in everything she does, and inspires everyone who comes into contact with her. These are just a sampling of the numerous glowing phrases used to describe the Downers Grove Elementary Education Association’s 2012 Teacher of the Year, Indian Trail kindergarten teacher Beth Hatlen.

Downers Grove police investigating suspicious incident near Grant and Oakwood

From the Downers Grove Police Department: On May 3, 2012, Downers Grove police were notified of a suspicious incident, which occurred in the area of Grant and Oakwood Avenues.

District 58 expects to adopt balanced budget for 2012-13

The District 58 Board of Education recently got its first look at the tentative spending plan for 2012-13. The district’s budget is expected to be in balance, or very close to it, again this year.  

Conservative budgeting, careful monitoring of—and proactive responses to—economic conditions, and continued maintenance of fund balances has put District 58 in a solid financial position.

District 58 to offer Chinese immersion language program for second year

For the second year in a row, Downers Grove Grade School District 58 has partnered with Community High School District 99 and STARTALK to offer a 60-hour Chinese language immersion summer program.

District 58 was one of just seven area school districts, including District 99, to offer such a program last summer, and the feedback from participants’ families was overwhelmingly positive.

Herrick to host summer volleyball, basketball camps

Herrick Middle School, 4435 Middaugh Ave., will be hosting a basketball camp and a volleyball camp this summer for students who will be entering fifth through eighth grade in the fall. Volleyball camp, which is co-ed, will run the week of June 11-15. Basketball camp, which will have separate sessions for girls and boys, will run the week of July 23-27, according to the following schedule:

Volleyball

Session 1, Incoming fifth and sixth grade, 8 to 10 a.m.

Session 2, Incoming seventh grade, 10 a.m. to noon
