Strategic Goals Action Plan 2010-11

Apply Best Programs and Practices

To complete stakeholder-driven Strategic Planning process to aid the District in the development of long range planning by:

  • Creating and working with a steering committee which will give input and direction to consultant and report to the Board,
  • Developing and completing a community-wide survey,
  • Holding stakeholder meeting, based on items identified in the survey, to provide input into the development of the Strategic Plan,
  • Creating a Strategic Plan document,
  • Presenting the Strategic Plan to the Board of Education, expected in January or February 2011,
  • Determining the next steps to be taken for the implementation of the Strategic Plan.

Continue to support the District-wide implementation of Response to Intervention (RtI) in 2010-2011 by:

  • Training administrators, special education staff and school faculties regarding the use of RtI in determining special education eligibility,
  • Supporting all school teams as they implement AIMSweb as the data collection and management tool for RtI,
  • Continuing focused professional development for all District administrators and school teams in the areas of the Problem Solving Method, provisions for integrity of program delivery, and the three tier system for intervention,
  • Providing standardized organizational tools and resources for school teams to support RtI implementation,
  • Researching and acquiring research based interventions for math instruction.

Provide support for the review and development of a service delivery model for English Language Learners (ELL) by:

  • Aligning instructional practices to Illinois English Language Learning Standards,
  • Building an understanding of the various instructional models in current research,
  • Aligning ACCESS assessment data to the instructional program,
  • Selecting the appropriate instructional materials.

Provide support for the implementation of the District's Standards-Based Student Reporting System by:

  • Continuing to implement District-wide staff development to align instruction and assessment with the report card learning standards, K-6,
  • Continuing to implement District-wide staff development to support teachers in the use of the PowerSchool electronics reporting system, K-6,
  • Continuing to build an understanding of the critical attributes of standards-based reporting and implement foundational principles of standards-based grading at the middle school level,
  • Continuing to receive feedback on the effectiveness of the standards-based grading system from staff and parents and respond to the feedback through faculty meetings, PTA meetings, and/or articles in school newsletters.

Review and develop the District's programs that address students' social and emotional learning by:

  • Continuing to provide staff development on social emotional learning (SEL),
  • Working with building SEL leadership teams to implement strategies for increasing social emotional support and skill development by students,
  • Exploring program options at the building level to address any identified needs and develop more systematic support for students,
  • Working in partnership with the DuPage County Regional Office of Education (ROE) and the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) to provide SEL training and resources for staff,
  • Continue collaborating with community organizations to determine potential resources that can assist students' growth in this area.

Provide support for the development of the District's Math Curriculum and plan District-wide staff development programs to support teachers' implementation of the Best Programs and Practices by:

  • Aligning assessments to Illinois Learning Standards/Common Core State Standards for Math,
  • Building an understanding of research based best instructional strategies and conceptual teaching,
  • Developing lesson formats with a focus on essential understanding and alignment to best practice in daily instruction,
  • Beginning the review process to select the appropriate materials for Board adoption,
  • Beginning development of a curriculum database.

Evaluate and refine the District's Communication Plan to increase the level of community engagement by:

  • Continuing to promote understanding of District and Board goals and initiatives, such as Response to Intervention (RtI) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL),
  • Providing communications/community engagement support for development and implementation of the District's strategic plan,
  • Continuing to improve upon existing communications vehicles within District 58 and seeking out new ways to share information and engage the community,
  • Continuing to take advantage of electronic communications for cost savings.

Continue to support the integration of technology into the curriculum by:

  • Providing technology classes and workshops,
  • Reviewing technology resources by building across the District.

To evaluate the District's current website and explore opportunities to expand its impact as an
interactive tool for parents, staff, students and the community by:

  • Creating a team to review and research other District's websites,
  • Developing criteria for District's web presence,
  • Interviewing potential vendors that are able to combine web hosting and development
    with parent notification services,
  • Evaluating the possibility of achieving our desired web presence and functionality using
    District staff,
  • Making a recommendation for action to the Board of Education.

 

Utilize the School Improvement Process as a Tool for Educational Assessment and Change

The school improvement teams will identify and evaluate indicators of school success as a means
of utilizing programs and practices that create continuous improvement in student achievement by:

  • Establishing a school level team that includes teachers, parents and administrators,
  • Utilizing indicators that include test score data, grades, attendance, and discipline
    referrals,
  • Analyzing the data obtained from these indicators to celebrate successes and implement
    effective interventions to improve student achievement,
  • Moving toward a system with better alignment to the ISBE school improvement planning
    process.

 

Attain Fiscal Integrity

Bid regular education transportation for services beginning in 2011-2012 by:

  • Looking for ways to reduce transportation costs,
  • Exploring the possibility of sharing services with District 68 and District 99,
  • Making recommendation for action to the Board.

Evaluate current District telephone equipment and make recommendation for possible
replacement in 2011-2012 by:

  • Evaluating desired features in a new system,
  • Investigating the cost to upgrade to a digital system, or potentially move to a voice over
    IP (VOIP) system, which utilizes data lines for voice service,
  • Making recommendation for action to the Board.

Complete the collective bargaining process with the Downers Grove Elementary Education
Association (DGEEA) by:

Establishing process and meeting dates with the DGEEA,

Working collaboratively with the DGEEA to identify and address concerns and issues,

Coming to resolution on a new bargaining agreement and related understandings.

 

Align Policies and Practices

Align District policies to legal requirements by:

  • Understanding new State requirement for school district policy,
  • Evaluating potential need for new District policy,
  • Meeting monthly to review, refine, or draft new policy,
  • Recommending policy to the full Board of Education for adoption.
