The Teachers’ Retirement Garden at Indian Trail School now features a beautiful new paver patio, thanks to the hard work of 17-year-old Downers Grove South High School senior Keith Kastenholz and his Boy Scout Troop 57.
Over a two-day event the weekend of September 30, Keith obtained the assistance of Troop 57, along with family and high school friends, to install a 12x16 foot paver patio at Indian Trail, where his family’s neighbor is a teacher.
The Eagle project was developed over the course of several months with the guidance of Indian Trail parent Cathi Loris and Eagle Coach Steve Rusch. As an Eagle Scout candidate, Keith managed the project by directing his crews to dig out 75 wheelbarrows of dirt and refill the hole with four cubic yards of road mix, sand and 600 bricks. The group edged the patio with ten bags of mulch. Tom Tuch, owner of Home Landscape Materials, Inc., was the material supplier and assisted Keith with brick laying expertise and knowledge.
“This was an amazing project involving 40 people and 200 man hours. I am just awed by the finished product and the work everyone did to complete the patio,” said Keith, who has been in scouting for 10 years.
The patio is surrounded by the school’s Teachers’ Retirement Garden, and will be used as a gathering space. The Retirement Garden was created by the school’s PTA to honor and commemorate retiring staff members, and was dedicated in May 2010.
Keith recently introduced himself and discussed his project at a recent Indian Trail staff meeting. They were extremely impressed with the work of Keith and his team – and of course, with the final product.
