Summer Math Club

Summer Math Club runs from May 27 through July 31, 2008
It is open to all students of Fairmount and Whittier schools

What is Summer Math Club?
Summer Math Club is an incentive-driven program to keep math brains strong all summer long.  Any Fairmount or Whittier student who completes specially-designed math sheets can earn prizes during the summer.  Students can visit the Downers Grove Public Library on special Math Club Prize Days throughout the summer, receive an incentive for their work along with math help when needed, and get additional math practice sheets to complete for more prizes.

Summer Math Club is funded by the PTAs of Fairmount and Whittier schools.
Summer Math Club is sponsored by The Downers Grove Public Library, Dairy Queen at 63rd and Main, Carlson’s Paint and Supplies, and the National Honor Society of Downers Grove South High School.

Please keep your Summer Math Club folder in a safe place where you can find it and use it to practice math during the summer.

  • You must complete all 6 pages of your math sheets to claim each prize.  You must have your completed math sheets with you to claim a prize.
  • You must redeem Math Club prizes at the Math Club Prize Table in the Junior Room study rooms of the Downers Grove Public Library.  No prizes may be redeemed at the Junior Room Desk.
  • Because Summer Math Club is not part of the Summer Reading Club, you may claim Math Club prizes only on certain days and times during the summer.  You may redeem prizes at the Math Club Prize Table in the Downers Grove Public Library’s Junior Room only during these dates and times:

Here are answers to some questions you might have about Summer Math Club.  We hope these will give you the information you need.

Q: Can I be in the Summer Math Club if I’m not from Fairmount or Whittier?
A: This year, Summer Math Club is for the students at Fairmount and Whittier schools only.  Perhaps it will be expanded in the future.  Talk to your school’s PTA representative if you’d like your school involved in Summer Math Club.

Q: I am home schooled.  Can I join Summer Math Club?
A: We cannot make accommodations for home schooled students at this time.

Q: What are the prizes?
A:  The prize for the first level is a set of two cool pencils, one recycled form a dollar bill and one recycled from blue jeans.  The prize for the second level is a coupon for a free Dairy Queen ice cream cone.  The prize for the third level is your choice of fun pencil sharpener.  Each prize comes with a Summer Math bookmark.

Q: Can my parents help me with my sheets?
A:  You may get help from your family on your sheets, but you should try to do as much as you can on your own.  This is math practice for you, to keep your math brain strong all summer long.

Q: Do I have to finish all the sheets to get a prize, or just some?
A: All the sheets you are given must be completed before you can collect your prize at each level.  You may complete them all at once, or you may work on them a little bit every day, but they all must be done to redeem your prize.

Q: Can I bring in my child’s completed math sheets if they can’t come to the library?
A:  It would be best if students could bring in their own sheets so that they could get help with any math concepts they need.  However, if your child cannot come in with their completed sheets, a parent or responsible adult may bring the sheets in for them and pick up their prize.

Q: I lost my folder and math sheets.  Can I get a new one at the Math Club Table?
A: We have a limited number of replacement sheets that are available when the Math Club Table is staffed.  When these run out, you may need to make your own copies of our master sheet.  It is best to keep your Summer Math Club folder and sheets in a place where you can find them and work on them regularly.

Q: I lost my math sheet.  Can I bring in a sheet I finished that I made at home/bought at a store/printed off the internet?
A: We cannot give prizes for sheets that were not prepared for Summer Math Club.  Our Math Club sheets have been designed for District 58’s curriculum by our teachers, and our volunteers have been trained to work with students on these particular sheets.  You can certainly work with your family on other math sheets during the summer, though.  The more practice, the better!

Q: I lost my math sheet.  Can I bring in one I copied from my friend?
A: If it is a clean copy of the proper sheet at the proper grade level, you may complete it and bring it in for a prize.

Q: Can I come in for my Math Club prize on a day that is not listed on my folder?
A: No.  The Junior Room staff is not responsible for handing out Math Club prizes.  If you cannot come to the library when the Math Club Prize Table is being staffed, you may bring your completed sheets to the Math Club Table at your school during the first three days of the school year to collect your prize.

Q: Can I leave my sheet at the Junior Room Desk if there’s no one at the Math Club Prize Table?
A: No.  If you cannot come to the library when the Math Club Prize Table is being staffed, you may bring your completed sheets to the Math Club Table at your school during the first three days of the school year to collect your prize.

Q: What do I do if I will not be home all summer long?
A: If you cannot come to the library during any of the Math Club Prize Days, you may complete the sheets you were given, and bring them to the Math Club Table at your school during the first three days of the school year to collect your prize.

Q: I’m starting junior high in the fall at O’Neill/Herrick.  If I miss the prize pick up days during the summer, can I get my prize from my junior high?
A: Junior high students will not be able to redeem any prizes at their new school.  We can only make that accommodation at the beginning of the school year for students returning to Fairmount or Whittier.

Q: Can I exchange a Math Club prize for a Summer Reading Club prize?
A: While the library is kind enough to let us share their space, our clubs are totally separate.  No exchanges can be made between clubs.  Once Math Club prizes are given, no exchanges will be made.

Q: Is there someone I can contact during the summer about Summer Math Club?
A:  You may leave an email at summermathclub@yahoo.com with any questions or concerns that are not addressed in the information above.  You will receive a reply within one week.  Thanks!
