William Herrick had served on the Downers Grove Board of
Education for over 30 years. The school was so named as a memorial to
William Herrick in honor of his service.
In 1968 students demonstrate handmade instruments.
Musicals in 1969 were performed in the gymnasium.

Additions were added in 1955, 1962, 1967, 1993, and 2005 to keep up with residential growth. The school was renamed Herrick Middle School in 1993 and now holds 647 seventh and eighth graders and 79 faculty and staff members. In the fall of 2004, seventh and eighth graders from Puffer Elementary became part of the student body at Herrick.
On February 19th, 2003 Herrick celebrated the 50th anniversary of Herrick Middle School. We invited all alumni, former staff members, parents, and friends of Herrick to the school library for an anniversary reception. We served refreshments and displayed pictures both old and new, news clippings, texts, and yearbooks for reminiscing Alumni noticed new additions to the building, an emphasis on technology, matured landscaping, the new entrance, and all the other positive improvements. Quality education, a caring staff, and the positive and friendly atmosphere still permeate the building today as they had done fifty years ago.
