Feb. 6 was the 100th day of school in District 58, an event which is celebrated annually throughout the district with celebrations, parades, visits from Zero the Hero, and special activities and projects, all involving the number 100.
A sampling of some of the many fun activities students enjoyed that day:
Lester kindergarten students sorted Froot Loops by color, grouped the colors by 10s, then strung them together to make a necklace. In addition, each student brought in a 100 days project where they had to count, bring in, and display 100 items. These included 100 marshmallows, 100 hearts, 100 pipecleaners (displayed as a woman with curly hair), 100 goldfish crackers in a fish bowl, 100 crayons (the student used a blow dryer to make the crayons run down the paper), 100 paper clips, 100 puzzle pieces and 100 horse stickers (presented on a make-shift horse ribbon).
Over at Indian Trail, Beth Hatlen’s kindergarteners created poster-board projects that illustrated the number 100, and wore them on a parade around the entire school. Afterwards, they enjoyed 100-day treats, then rotated through activities related to the number 100. These included guessing how far down a table a line of 100 small blocks would go, and walking, skipping, galloping or tiptoing 100 steps.
