DG Fire Department Ride to School Winner
All students are experienced with fire drills at school. We practice our exit plan three times per year. Unfortunately not many families have an exit plan for home. Firefighter and education officier MarciaGiesler teaches our third grade students in the Learn Not to Burn program, how to create and practice a home escape plan. Students are encouraged to bring this information home and design and practice a fire drill at home with their entire family. Once the family has completed the drill, a child may submit a copy of their plan to the fire department to win a ride to school on a fire truck. One lucky third grader’s name is drawn from those students attending school on the north side of the village, and another from the south side. Each winner is allowed to choose a friend and their teacher to come along for the ride. Firefighter/Paramedic Dale Smith, who began the contest, picks the winners up at their home in the morning in Truck 1 and drives the group to Station 5 where they eat breakfast with the firefighters. Once breakfast is finished, they begin their journey to school. School principals, teachers, and other students cheer for them as they arrive in style.
We are pleased to announce that Cameron in Mrs. Swallows class is the winner of this year's Ride to School Contest. Cameron designed a detailed plan for escaping his house in an emergency. His plan even includes a meeting place outside his home for his family to gather in the event they were separated during their exit from the house. Congratulations Cameron
