Pierce Downer ceremony honors fallen District 58 veterans and their families..
In the photo gallery to the right, you’ll find Marine Shawn Doty speaking about the importance of remembering our veterans during a ceremony at Pierce Downer School Nov. 10, as well as a photo of Sgt. Andrew Music (back left) and Sgt. Shawn Doty (center), Marla Gilbert, Mike Gilbert, Jackson Gilbert (with furry hat), Terri Gilbert, Barb Stevenson, Joe Stevenson and Samantha Matook, standing with a bench installed behind Pierce Downer in honor of fallen Marines and District 58 alumni Thomas Gilbert and Joseph Stevenson. The Downers Grove Rotary Club donated the bench, which was dedicated following the ceremony organized by the Early Act Club. Mayor Ron Sandack told the audience that Veteran’s Day is like Thanksgiving for veterans. “They’ve given us just about every freedom and privilege that we enjoy,” he said.

Henry Neff, the author and illustrator of the celebrated young adult fantasy fiction series “The Tapestry,” shared stories and tips with Herrick Middle School students during his visit to the Downers Grove school late last month. Read more...

Ballet at El Sierra
Dancers from Ballet Folklorico visited El Sierra School recently in a PTA-sponsored assembly to teach the students about other cultures through dance.

Conflict Day
Students at Herrick Middle School got to learn about the various wars in American history in a hands-on way during Conflict Day earlier this year through activities such as a Civil War weapons demonstration, talks by “Abraham Lincoln” and “FDR,” and a look at what life was like in camp during WWII.

Mother Goose pays a visit to El Sierra. Mother Goose, actually a former Pierce Downer parent, paid a visit to El Sierra’s kindergarten classes earlier this month to sing songs and re-create nursery rhymes with all of the students’ help.

A royally interesting writing lesson. Merlin officially makes Arthur the king, now that Arthur has learned to write in a variety of styles appropriate to his new position (expository, persuasive and narrative), in front of an audience of Hillcrest School students Sept. 30. The actors, part of a group called Face to Face Productions, performed a musical called “Writing Royally” at the school that day.
