Nine students to represent District 58 at Regional Science Fair

DOWNERS GROVE—The seats are filling up quickly for the District 58 Education Foundation’s 2010 Entertainment for Education fundraiser featuring the Bacon Brothers. Tickets went on sale Dec. 18, and after just two weeks, the premium and second-tier seats are nearly sold out. (Click here)

District 58 Education Foundation set to give away nearly $20,000 in grants to schools
The District 58 Education Foundation is giving away nearly $20,000 in grants this school year. Staff were encouraged to apply for mini-grants ($500 or less) and maxi grants of $500 or more to enhance curriculum or technology innovations, including staff development. The committee received a total of 17 requests from nine schools, including 12 maxi grant requests and five mini grant requests. (Click here)

Former Herrick teachers fire up kids’ imaginations
A visit from Amy Krouse Rosenthal, the author of popular children’s books including “Little Pea” and “Little Hoot,” along with a lively storytime with members of the Downers Grove North speech team, made the annual Lester PTA family reading night April 16 an occasion to remember for more than 300 attendees.
Rosenthal spent the day at the school talking to students about creative writing, and during the evening, students heard stories read aloud by Rosenthal and the Downers Grove North speech team members while sampling book-themed snacks.
British author sparks imaginations at Fairmount School
Steve Cole, British author of children's and middle-grade books, visited Fairmount School on Sept. 18 to give a highly enthusiastic and interactive presentation on the role of imagination in the writing process.
Cole touched on themes of revision and word choice, all the while cracking up the fifth and sixth grade students in the classes of KC Chick, Deanna Bloom and Kaye Hutchison.
‘Sloppy Joe’ author, illustrator visit Pierce Downer

When author Dave Keane and illustrator Denise Brunkus visited Pierce Downer School on Sept. 15 to talk about their new book, “Sloppy Joe,” the first through third graders also learned about writing, illustrating, and how the duo gets their ideas.
FOX News meteorologist Amy Freeze shows Indian Trail third through fifth grade students how she does the weather on TV. The fourth grade students had been learning about weather, and wrote her to ask if she would come for a visit.
